Everton’s manager David Moyes has acknowledged that Liverpool’s record-breaking spending in the recent transfer window is justified. He argues that a club has to “earn the right” to spend big—through strong performance—before making such large investments. Moyes said that participating and succeeding in major competitions brings in the funds necessary to do so. He mentioned his experience at West Ham, where three seasons of European competition allowed the club to spend more. From Moyes’ perspective, Liverpool currently deserves their level of spending.
For Everton, the challenge remains large. They have gone several seasons struggling, including threats of relegation, but there’s renewed optimism following the move to their new 53,000 capacity stadium. Moyes noted that Everton need to close the gap with Liverpool, but understands there is a “gulf” between the two clubs. Liverpool, he said, are reigning champions and regular contenders for Champions League places, while Everton are still rebuilding. He also pointed out Everton’s lack of wins at Anfield—something he personally hasn’t achieved in 22 matches with various clubs—and the difficulty of trying to bridge that kind of difference.
